The Camargue Regional Nature Park sits where the Rhône River meets the Mediterranean, and it's unlike anywhere else in France. This vast wetland is famous for its white Camargue horses running wild across the marshes, pink flamingos wading through shallow lagoons, and black bulls raised for the local tradition of course camarguaise. 🐂 It's a photographer's dream and a wonderful place to slow down, whether you explore by car, on horseback, or by bike along the flat, scenic trails. The pink salt flats near Salin-de-Giraud add an almost otherworldly touch of color to the landscape.

Arles: Roman History and Van Gogh's Provence 🎨

Arles is one of the most historically rich towns in the region, home to a remarkably well-preserved Roman amphitheater still used for events today. It's also the town where Vincent van Gogh painted some of his most famous works, and wandering the streets, you'll recognize scenes straight out of his paintings. The Wednesday and Saturday markets here are among the best in Provence for local produce, cheese, and Provençal goods. 🧀

Saint-Rémy-de-Provence: Charm, Markets, and Van Gogh Again 🌻

Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is one of the most charming towns in the Alpilles, with tree-lined boulevards, boutique shops, and a wonderful Wednesday market that draws visitors from all over the region. It's also home to the Saint-Paul de Mausole monastery, where Van Gogh spent time and painted works like Starry Night. The surrounding countryside, dotted with olive groves and cypress trees, looks exactly like his canvases. ⭐

Les Baux-de-Provence: A Village Carved Into the Rock 🏰

Perched dramatically atop a rocky outcrop in the Alpilles, Les Baux-de-Provence is one of the most striking villages in all of France. The medieval castle ruins offer sweeping views across the valley, and the village streets are full of art galleries, local shops, and stunning stone architecture. Nearby, the Carrières de Lumières light show, projected inside a former limestone quarry, is a completely unique experience worth building your day around. 💡

A little further into the Luberon but well worth the extra drive, Gordes is regularly named one of the most beautiful villages in France, with its stone houses cascading down a hillside in a way that looks almost unreal. The views from the village over the valley below are some of the best in the region.

Avignon: The City of Popes 🏛️

Just north of the Alpilles, Avignon is famous for the Palais des Papes, once home to the Popes during the 14th century, and the iconic Pont d'Avignon bridge immortalized in the classic French song. The old city walls, lively squares, and excellent restaurants make it a wonderful stop to end your day.

Planning Your Trip Through the Camargue and Alpilles 🚗

This region is best explored with a car, since the beauty is spread across the countryside and small villages rather than concentrated in one place. Depending on your pace, you could combine the Camargue with Arles in one day, and Saint-Rémy, Les Baux, and Avignon in another, or slow it all the way down and spend several days soaking in the villages, markets, and landscapes that inspired some of the world's most famous paintings. 🌅
