It's one of the best things to do in Provence for families, nature lovers, and anyone who wants to see a truly different side of the south of France.

Where Is It and How Do You Get There? 🗺️

The Gorges du Verdon sits roughly in the center of Provence, about a 2 to 2.5 hour drive from Marseille, depending on which part of the gorge you're heading to. The route itself is half the fun, winding through Provençal countryside, small villages, and rolling hills before the landscape suddenly opens up into this dramatic canyon. 🚗 Renting a car is really the best way to explore, since it lets you stop at the many viewpoints along the way, but organized day trips and small group tours are also a great option if you'd rather sit back and enjoy the scenery.

There are two main roads that hug the canyon: the Route des Crêtes on the northern rim (not to be confused with the one near Cassis) and the Corniche Sublime on the southern side. Both offer jaw-dropping viewpoints, so if you have time, doing a loop around both sides is the way to go. 📸

Boating on the Turquoise Water 🚤

This is the highlight for most visitors, and for good reason. Down at Lac de Sainte-Croix, where the Verdon River widens into a lake before continuing into the gorge, you can rent kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, or small electric boats. 🛶 Paddling into the mouth of the canyon, surrounded by towering cliffs and that unreal turquoise color, is genuinely one of those "pinch me" moments of a Provence trip. No license needed for the small electric boats, which makes it an easy and fun activity for the whole family.

Why It's So Family-Friendly 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Unlike some of the more strenuous hikes in the region, the Gorges du Verdon offers something for every energy level. Families can spend a relaxed afternoon swimming and boating at the lake, while more adventurous visitors can hike sections of the famous Sentier Martel trail along the canyon floor, or even try via ferrata routes bolted into the cliffside. There are picnic spots everywhere, charming villages to explore nearby, and plenty of ice cream stops along the way for the kids. 🍦

Charming Villages Nearby 🏘️

Two villages are worth building your day around. Moustiers-Sainte-Marie is a beautiful cliffside village famous for its hand-painted pottery, with a star suspended on a chain between two cliffs above the town (there's a fun legend behind it worth asking a local about). Aiguines, on the southern side, sits perched above the lake with sweeping views and a much quieter, more authentic feel.

Best Time to Visit ☀️

Late spring through early fall is ideal, when the water is warm enough for swimming and boating and the trails are dry. July and August are the busiest months, so if you can visit in June or September, you'll enjoy the same stunning scenery with noticeably fewer crowds.
